Why I buildOn: I joined buildOn because I believe that education is the first and most important step in alleviating and addressing poverty. Access to education has been taken for granted by many, as countless students worldwide aren’t able to go to school. Here at buildOn, I love how we can work together to make a big difference at home and on the global scale. We can see our progress in actual physical results that have transformed the lives of many people within a community. I hope we can continue to raise awareness of buildOn here on campus while collecting funds to build many more schools for years to come.

Fun Fact: My birthday is sometimes on Thanksgiving

Why I buildOn: Coming to the University of Delaware, I joined the buildOn club as a means of continuing my love for service during my college years. Among various things, what appealed to me the most about the chapter at UD was its inclusion of both community-based and globally focused efforts. While trying to raise money to build schools abroad, buildOn is also involved in the community in the form of various outreach programs such as Girls Inc., that works to increase awareness and confidence amongst young girls in the community.

The specific values and initiatives of buildOn, as summarized in its slogan of breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy at home and abroad, are also very close to my heart personally. My grandfather, having immigrated to the US from Italy when he was a teenager, has always instilled in me a great value for education. Ever since I was a little girl, he would tell me that he worked so hard when he came to America in order to give his children and grandchildren a better life than he had. A major factor in this was education, one of the most powerful tools a person can have. He would always tell my cousins and I that us doing well in school was his greatest gift in life. If my grandfather was still alive, I know he would be right here next to me supporting such an amazing movement.
