City Year Philadelphia Day of Service

partner-city-year-logoCity Year is an organization emphasizing the importance of education within urban areas, and provides volunteers with the opportunities to help students from these schools. BuildOn at UD members participated in City Year in 2016 and 2017. The focus for this project is the revitalization of Thomas Alva Edison High School in northern Philadelphia.

BuildOn at UD members worked with hundreds of other volunteers to paint murals in various areas of the school in order to promote a welcoming environment for students. They worked from 9am until 2pm painting a staircase mural in the school’s colors, green and yellow. Thomas Alva Edison High School was left with full coats of paint, and BuildOn at UD members left with full smiles on their faces.

“At City Year, we believe education has the power to help every child reach his or her potential. However, in high-poverty communities there are external factors and obstacles students are faced with every day that can interfere with their ability to get to school ready to learn.”

Girls Inc

girlsinclogoGirls Inc is an organization that seeks to empower girls and provide them with vital knowledge to help them succeed in their careers, and break past common challenges that
girls face in today’s society. They strive to impart their students with educational programs that promote math and science, while trying to steer them away from teen pregnancy and drug abuse. Girls Inc also emphasizes equipping girls with knowledge about economic and media literacy, and promoting involvement in sports.

Our BuildOn at UD members are working with Girls Inc to help promote economic literacy to girls from the Wilmington area. They work alongside program leaders within classrooms of about 15-25 girls for several hours each week. Members help keep the girls on track during group work, and assist the program leaders with activities relating back to Girls Inc’s goals.
