The buildOn organization currently builds schools in 7 countries in rural communities to fulfill our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty, illiteracy and low expectations. So far, the University of Delaware chapter has constructed two schools. Construction began during the summer of 2014 for the first school in Nicaragua and during the summer of 2015 for the second school, constructed in Burkina Faso.
Unique from other organizations, those who have helped fund the school will have the opportunity to travel to the village where the new school will be constructed. During this time, students live with host families and assist in the initial steps of construction which can include forming rebar, making bricks, mixing concrete, digging the foundation and latrines, and fetching water with the women in the village. Throughout the week, students take in local culture by learning some of the local language, engaging in cultural workshops, trying new foods, and speaking to various members of the community.
